The Hoot and Doot Cowboy Fishing Show
The Hoot and Doot Cowboy Fishing Show is “On The Air.”
Dateline Clay County, TX:
Memorial Day weekend is, for Hoot and Doot, a time to think about fishing and we took the opportunity to make a break for Hoot’s ranch in Clay County near the thriving town of Henrietta. Stock tank fishing was the order for the day. Hoot was sure that the low pressure would affect the fish in a catchy kinda way. It was cloudy day and rain was threatening, so Hoot was pretty sure his theory would hold. Doot and Hoot met up on Hwy 287 where Hwy 114w crosses at the Exxon. After loading up the gear, The Hoot and Doot Cowboy Fishing Show was back on the air. So, come with us now and join those two erstwhile purveyors of the cowboy fishing way…
We stopped for diesel and then we stopped again at the Armadillo Grill. Now this is not what you think, no armadillos were on the menu. There were a few customers and waitresses that sorta looked like armadillos there were no actual armadillos present.
About an hour later, we arrived at the ranch. The cows were at the other end of the property did not seem to think we were there just to feed them. The tank was pretty small but had a lot of water in it. We talked about the house trailer up on the hill. Hoot is planning to have a damned big hole dug beside the trailer and then they are gonna push it in the hole and bury it. I suggested putting a tombstone next to the grave. Hoot did not respond to my suggestion.
We drove up to the stock tank and used about a ton of the product “OFF” and other deet related products to try and ward off the chiggers. Then we got the ultralite fishing gear out and proceeded to the waters edge. We both got a lot of casting practice. I tried a few spinners and I think Hoot was using salmon eggs. I heard Hoot holler “Fish On” several times. I was striking out. Off in the distance two dogs started to come over to visit us. They were friendly enough. Looked like they were Blue Heeler/Border Collie mixed. The first fish Hoot caught was a little perch and I think he was gonna cut it up for bait but while he went for his knife the fish flopped on to the grass and one of the dogs gulped him down. That last part is pure speculation on Hoots part but it seems to be the only reasonable explanation as to where that little perch went.
At some point we decided that Night Crawlers were what would be what would wet the fish’s whistles. We piled into the truck and headed into the megatroplis of Henrietta to look for worms. Several places told us that they did not carry bait. At the Jolly, TX truck stop I bought a can of kernel corn. Back to the ranch we went. I rigged up a bobber and some shot weights and a hook on the ultralite. Hoot rigged up his fly rod and baited the hook with corn.
I started to even the catch count with the corn. I caught a perch and a very young and small nice green colored bass. Hoot had several strikes but I don’t think he actually landed anything else. Around 5:30pm we started back to the house. One stop in Decatur where we met Hoots lovely bride Rodeo Kate for Mexican food at Casa Torres. Good food.
